Why do I need a twin DNA test?

  • Because looking at resemblance and the physical characteristics between twins is not always a clear way of knowing if twins are monozygotic or dizygotic.
  • Identical twins will have the same blood groups and therefore they can donate blood to each other. They can also be compatible organ donors for each other in cases where organ transplantation is required.

Due to New York State Department of Health regulations, we cannot offer any peace of mind paternity or relationship tests to New York residents.  Contact us or click here for more information.

How does a twin DNA test work?

In order to tell you whether twins are identical or fraternal, we will need a DNA sample from each twin. The sample can be collected using our home sample collection kit which will be dispatched to you as soon as we have processed your order. Inside the kit you will have:

  • 4 mouth swabs per twin
  • Instructions
  • Consent forms (these are just forms that you are required to fill out with some basic details and signatures and consenting us to test the samples)

You will then return the swabs for laboratory analysis. Results of your twin DNA test will be ready in just 2-3 working days from receipt of samples at the laboratory.

    How are twins conceived?

Identical twins result when a single sperm cell fertilizes a single ovum and the egg then splits into 2, forming 2 separate embryos which are genetically carbon copies of each other. Non Identical twins result when two ova are fertilized independently by 2 independent sperm cells forming 2 embryos with different genetic makeups.

Our twin DNA test can confirm whether the DNA profiles of the test participants are identical (proving they are identical twins) or whether their DNA profiles are different (proving they are non-identical twins). Non identical twins are no different , in terms of their DNA, to normal siblings.
